13 Songs A Day - Issue #001

This is the first of what will be a daily(or sometimes maybe more or less often) post of 13 songs. These will be songs I like, songs stuck in my head, songs from a certain year or memory, or just songs I select for other reasons.

Today, the list starts with a tune that was stuck in my head this past week. From 1984, this was the 2nd biggest US hit for British singer Joe Jackson. This is "You can't get what you want (til you know what you want)" and it is:

Next, it is a great underground hip hop joint from 1992. Philly rappers Steady B, Cool C and Ultimate Eaze formed the trio C.E.B. (Countin' Endless Bank) and had this one monster party jam hit before legal problems dissolved the group. Cool C and Steady B took part in an armed bank robbery in 1996, during the crime a female cop was shot and killed. Steady B was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the murder. This is no endorsement of the crime, but an acknowledgment of a great tune, C.E.B's "Get The Point" it is:

In 1987 Fleetwood Mac released the album "Tango in the night", the bands 14th release. It would become their 2nd biggest seller after the 1977 classic "Rumours". This song was the biggest US hit from "Tango...", reaching as high as #4, this is "Little Lies" at

I have to include a tune from my fave band in this list. So many to choose from, but today I will pick the song Def Leppard used to open the show on the Hysteria tour in 1988. This is the 1983 jam "Stagefright", at

The next song is by a band that isn't really one of my favorites, but they have made some music I like. This is Atlanta, Georgia's own R.E.M. and 1988's "Orange Crush"

This music legend passed away this past summer. His music, however, will last forever. With so many giant hits by the gloved one to choose from, I decided on a 1984 duet with his older brother Jermaine. This is of course, Michael Jackson(with Jermaine) on a song from Jermaine's "Dynamite" album. "Tell me I'm not dreamin'(Too good to be true)"

As I get past the halfway mark, the next song is by Baltimore-area band Kix. These guys rose to stardom in the 80s, but their classic rock guitar/blues sound would have been a success in any era. Still touring to this day, they have a show in Sayreville,NJ at the Starland Ballroom next Friday. This is "Cold shower" by Kix:

An oldie but goodie at #5. It was odd to find out that one of the members of this band, Creed Bratton, is on the sitcom The Office, playing a character of the same name. The Grass Roots are up next, with 1967's top 5 smash "Let's live for today"

Now another change of pace....Phill Collins (and Genesis) are among my faves. This is from 1989's "...but seriously" album. This is Phil Collins with "Something happened on the way to heaven"

Now back to my youth, and fun rap duo Kid'n'Play. Their 1990 movie "House party" is an alltime classic, the 1991 sequel, not so much....but House Party 2 did have a kicking soundtrack that featured the duo on this jam "Ain't gonna hurt nobody"

In the runner-up slot, it is the DC group Shai, and a song that was actually on both their album "Blackface" as well as the Beverly Hills Cop 3 soundtrack. This is "The place where you belong" by Shai.
