Musical Post-March Madness

With 256 songs, it has taken a while to whittle the field down. Now there are 32 songs remaining, competing head to head.

Here are the latest match-ups:
TLC "Creep"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X0tNO3QFoOE

The lovely ladies from Atlanta made it this far by defeating "Joy" by Teddy Pendergrass, "California love" by 2Pac, and "Love overboard" by Gladys Knight. This round they face a powerhouse.

Freddie Jackson has several songs included in the 256 song pool, and 1990's "Love me down" is up now.

Two R&B stalwarts face off next, Keith Sweat's 1996 jam "Nobody", who defeated Janet Jackson's "Control" in round one before taking down Shai's If I ever fall in love" and R.Kelly's "You remind me of something".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FMar1ifzdmk

Keith's opponent is the late R&B legend Luther Vandross with his 1986 smash "Stop to love".

College basketball madness begins

The conference tourneys are in full gear and it's time to check on all the local teams I follow from Virginia, New Jersey, and the northwest.

New Jersey:
Seton Hall (18-10) is playing tomorrow night in the first round of the Big East tourney. The 18 wins should get the Pirates into one of the 4 postseason tourneys regardless, but it's a tough road to win the conference tourney to make the NCAAs. They face 12-18 Providence in the first game.

Rutgers (15-16) is also playing tomorrow night, against the 16-14 Cincinnati Bearcats. The Scarlet Knights need probably 2 wins at least to even get a bid to the CBI or collegeinsider.com tourney.

Princeton (19-8) has finished its' season, the 19 wins MAY get an NIT bid most years, but Harvard has over 20 wins and will likely snag an NIT spot.

N.J.I.T. (9-20) after losing every game for about 2 years, the Highlanders winning 9 this year is a good accomplishment. They are now in the Great West Conference, for unknown reasons, but they are playing in the first round of the GWC Tourney Wednesday against 8-22 North Dakota. The GWC, as a new conference, does NOT have an automatic bid to the NCAAs, but they will send their champion to the collegeinsider.com tourney.

Rider (17-16) the Broncos won their first game in the MAAC tourney over in-state rival St. Peter's 72-65, but fell to eventual MAAC champion Siena 72-62 in the semifinals. Hopes for a bid to a postseason tourney are dim.

St. Peter's (16-14) the season ended for the Peacocks with that 7 point loss to Rider in the MAAC quarterfinals. They had a winning season, but will again miss out on the postseason, as they have every year since 1995.

Monmouth (12-19) lost in the first round of the Northeast Conference Tournament to top seeded Quinnipiac 84-75. The season is over for the Hawks.

Fairleigh Dickinson (11-21) nearly upset Long Island in the first round of the Northeast Conference Tournament, falling just 2 points short. The season is over for the Knights.

Virginia:
Virginia (14-15) is set for the ACC Tournament, they will meet Boston College (15-15) in an opening round game. Should they win, their reward is a game against Duke.

Virginia Tech. (23-7) is headed for at least an NIT berth, but can pad its' resume for an NCAA bid should they get a couple of wins in the ACC Tourney. Their journey begins in the quarterfinals on Friday against the winner of the Wake Forest/Miami game.

Richmond (24-7) has possibly already made its' claim for an NCAA berth, and can help themselves in the A-10 Tourney Friday when they face the winner of the Charlotte/UMass game.

Liberty (15-16) had their season come to an end in the first round of the Big South Tourney when they fell to eventual champion Winthrop 80-72.

Radford (19-12) lost in the Big South semifinals to Winthrop 61-46, but the Highlanders still have some hope for a bid to either the CBI or the collegeinsider.com tournament.

VMI (10-19) lost in the first round of the Big South Tourney to Coastal Carolina 82-73. The season is over for the Keydets.

VCU (22-9) fell to ODU in the semifinals of the CAA Tournament 73-69, but with 22 wins, the Rams will surely be playing in a postseason tournament.

ODU (25-8) won the CAA Tournament over William & Mary 60-53 and earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

William & Mary (22-9) fell to ODU in the CAA final by 7, but still should earn a postseason trip somewhere.

JMU (13-20) lost in the CAA quarterfinals to William & Mary 70-65, the season is over for the Dukes.

George Mason (17-14) lost in the CAA quarters for VCU 75-60, the Patriots hold out some hope for a postseason bid to one of the tournaments.

Longwood (12-19) completed it's season and as an independent the Lancers have no postseason tournament.

Hampton (13-17) is set for the MEAC Tournament, they meet Norfolk State in the quarterfinals.

Norfolk State (11-18) will play in the MEAC quarters against arch-rival Hampton.

Washington:
Washington (21-9) is set for the Pac 10 Tournament and will face Oregon State (14-16) in the quarterfinals. They should have a good shot at an NCAA bid.

Washington State (16-14) has to play the opening round game of the Pac 10 Tournament against Oregon (15-15) on Wednesday. The Cougars likely need a couple wins to earn their way into a postseason tourney.

Seattle U. (17-14) has concluded its' season as an independent. The Redhawks' season is over.

Gonzaga (26-6) was upset by St. Mary's in the WCC Championship game. The Bulldogs will surely still make the NCAA Tournament.

Oregon:
Portland (21-10) Pilots lost in the WCC semifinals to eventual champion St. Mary's 69-55. While an NCAA bid isn't in the cards, UP can hope for an NIT bid or one of the other two tournaments to come calling.

Oregon (15-15) faces Washington State (16-14) in the opening round game of the Pac 10 Tournament. The Ducks need several wins to earn a postseason berth.

Oregon State (14-16) takes on Washington in the quarterfinals of the Pac 10 Tourney. The Beavers need several wins for any hope of playing in the postseason.

Portland State (13-18) is the bottom seed in the Big Sky Tournament and, having defeated Montana State in the first round, faces top seed Weber State (19-9) in the semifinals tomorrow night. The Vikings need to win the tournament to play in the postseason.

Musical March Madness Part 2

The Opening Round continues...

Freddie Jackson's "Love Me Down" narrowly defeated The Gap Band's "All my love", then Michael Jackson crushed young Tevin Campbell, making TC 0-2 in the brackets so far. "The way you make me feel" was the big winner over "Tell me what you want me to do". And Tony! Toni! Tone! easily beat Shanice's "I love your smile" with it's 1990 magical "It never rains (in southern California)".

In a clash of R&B titans, Keith Sweat's "Nobody" upset Janet Jackson's "Control" and then Shai's 1992 slow jam "If I ever fall in love" made short work of Ziggy Marley's "Tumblin' down".

Up next, 2Pac's "How do you want it" takes on Miki Howard's "Ain't nothin' in the world", the victor advances to meet the winner of R.Kelly's "You remind me of something" versus Lionel Richie's "Do it to me".

Musical March Madness

To find a way to celebrate March Madness in another way, I decided to set up brackets and have songs "battle it out" to find a champion. The theme I chose was the #1 R&B Hits from 1987-1996. Now, there were over 260 songs that topped the charts during that time, I weeded out a few less desirable ones (really, who needs to hear George Michael?) and finalized a bracket of 256 songs.

I started the Opening Round yesterday and here's how it went:

"Girlfriend" by Bobby Brown, his first big solo hit, went up against the R. Kelly smash "I believe I can fly" and came up short. R.Kelly advanced to the round of 128.

The 1987 jam by Gladys Knight & The Pips, "Love Overboard" dispatched the 1995 Whitney Houston tune "Exhale (Shoop shoop)". No worries for either Bobby or Whitney as both of them have numerous songs in the bracket.

In a close match up, the late Teddy Pendergrass lost with his hit "Joy", falling to TLC's 1994 jam "Creep".

The rout of the night was when 2Pac's "California Love" destroyed Tevin Campbell's sweet song "Can we talk?". Like Bobby and Whitney, Tevin has more tunes in the bracket still to come.

Another blowout was when Whitney Houston's mega-hit "I will always love you" demolished Babyface's "Tender Lover" to end the evening match ups.

Now, the next match ups:

Freddy Jackson, who has several songs entered, sends his smooth "Love me down" up against R&B veterans The Gap Band, whose only entry is "All of my love". The winner advances to meet the Whitney mega-hit.

Also, Michael Jackson's "The way you make me feel" takes on another Tevin Campbell tune, "Tell me what you want me to do".

13 Songs A Day...Issue #008

From the depths of about 2 feet of snow....the latest List of 13:

(Highest List Ranking) [# of days on List]

#13 (NR)[--] "Still of the night" WHITESNAKE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UyWHdXb_CY
Another of the many great songs on Whitesnakes' 1987 self-titled album. Gorgeous Tawny Kitaen in the videos didn't hurt, but this band was more than just good videos. The guitar work on this tune is fantastic.

#12 (NR)[--] "Into the fire" DOKKEN
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2pAjKViITM
Really getting back into Dokken lately....George Lynch's guitar work is magnificent...and at leats now the corny videos look goofy and nostalgic instead of just silly. This is among their best songs ever.

#11 (NR)[--] "Contagious Y&T
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVnKhB3pt4A

Another new entry to the list, this 80s gem from longtime rockers Y&T was forgotten by me until I saw this vid on VH1Classic's Metal Mania recently. Great song, solid 80s vid.

#10 (NR)[--] "No one is to blame" HOWARD JONES
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Fiba80YVyM
The interesting lyrics in the seminal 80s song by the UK's Howard Jones really make it memorable, as does the simplistic pop music track.

#9 (NR)[--] "Jailbreak" THIN LIZZY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7RLyufcDHE
Can't believe Thin Lizzy hadn't made the list a single time yet....well, that drought is over.

#8 (NR)[--] "Brothers gonna work it out" PUBLIC ENEMY
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MlLvFUigPzE

Another group that had yet to make an appearance on the list. PE's "Brothers..." is a great tune from arguably their best work, 1990's "Fear Of A Black Planet".

#7 (NR)[--] "Fishnet" MORRIS DAY & THE TIME
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bHEaJaRT3Is
From 1988, The Time hits the list with a great funky jam from the album "Daydreaming".

#6 (2)[3rd] "Lunatic fringe" RED RIDER
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xp9852hq0W0
The 3rd appearance form the early 80s classic from Canada's Red Rider.

#5 (NR)[--] "Chief rocka" LORDS OF THE UNDERGROUND
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFbLRZCExBk

Boom Shock a locka! Straight from Brick City, Newark, New Jersey LOTUG's biggets hit leaps onto the list at the 5th spot.

#4 (NR)[--] "Psycho dwarf" THE BEATNUTS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gi_dM-kohR4
From NYC, these genius producers who also possess sick lyrical flow lit up the hip hop world in 1994 with this party anthem.

#3 (5)[2nd] "Don't dream it's over" CROWDED HOUSE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCqsG1t7RoU
Returning to the list for a 2nd time, Crwoded House makes it into the top 3.

#2 (NR)[--] "Whisky in the jar" METALLICA
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsrvmNtWU4E
Metal Gods Metallica make the list with a cover tune.

#1 (NR)[--] "The price" TWISTED SISTER
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLHdP4dkdkQ
NYCs legendary Twisted Sister hits the top of the list with....a ballad?

13 Songs A Day...Issue #007

After another break, here are 13 more songs that are worthy of another listen:

#13 "Modern Day Delilah" by Van Stephenson (1984)
Early 80s hit from a man who went on to much success in country music before his death a few years ago.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2GLA-gYuFi0

#12 "Just Kickin' It" by XScape (1993)
Jermaine Dupri found this girl group who had a string of hits in the early/mid 90s. This was their debut single.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_BTEFAVwjU&feature=channel

#11 "When it's love" by Van Halen (1988)
Eddie took to the keyboards again in the 1988 smash from Van "Hagar".

80s British band, The Fixx, with one of the landmark hits.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCM4_5uB1ww

#8 "Possession Obsession" by Hall & Oates (1984)
My fave duo with one of their best songs. John Oates sings lead on this top ten hit from 1984.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAmgHGtOeJ0

#7 "You could be mine" by Guns N Roses (1991)
From Terminator 2, GnR had one of their biggest hits with this jam from the soundtrack, as well as the GnR "Use your illusion" twin albums.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzB5hFINC_k

#6 "Got the time" by Anthrax (1992)
Oddly enough, this is a remake of a Joe Jackson hit. The NYC band turned up the volume and raced up the speed and the result is this great tune.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=be7iNHw8QoQ

#5 "Don't dream it's over" by Crowded House (1986)
From the remnants of Split Enz, Crowded House hit it big briefly in the late 80s. This was their biggest hit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oCqsG1t7RoU

#4 "Bullet with butterfly wings" by Smashing Pumpkins (1999)
The song that many people believe is called "Rat in a cage" was a smash hit for the pumpkins.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ktff3bZpux8

#3 "Crush on you" by The Jets (1986)
A musical family from originally from the Pacific Islands, but hailing from Minnesota. The Jets still tour today, and had a bundle of hits in the 80s, starting with their debut hit.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nm_QilrHkh8

#2 "Seven wonders" by Fleetwood Mac (1987)
Still hanging around the list, this classic from their "Tango in the night" album is riding high at the second slot.

#1 "Screaming in the night" by Krokus (1985)
80s metal band, Krokus had a few hits during the hair heyday. This 1985 tune was their trademark hit.

13 Songs A Day...Issue #006

After the Holiday Break, back again with another baker's dozen of songs to jam to as we start enjoying 2010.

Starting off with a great tune by DC's Shai. This is "The place where you belong", returning to the list at #13
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOzFBCg-ooo

Former frontman for House Of Pain, Everlast, is in at #12 with his great 1998 song, "What it's like". Everlast now leads a reunited House Of Pain who perform under the name La Coca Nostra.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gliNv1eFF3w

An English glam rock band probably only really known in the US by the Quiet Riot cover of their 1970s hit Come On Feel The Noise, Slade did have a handful of American hits. This one, from 1982, was a fave of mine as a kid....the lyrics are very odd at times, but its a cool, and unusual tune to this day. This is "Run runaway" at #11
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CJwTvBexyJM

Cracking the top 10 with arguably the greatest song these 5 men from Germany have ever recorded. At least in my view, "The Zoo" tops the list of songs by the Scorpions. Here is that 1979 jam, at #10.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXuV56594bY

Next is the Godfather of Funk, George Clinton. He hits #9 with his 1993 cult classic. This is "If anybody gets funked up(It's gonna be you)"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1MRtkAEDbjU

Fleetwood Mac stays on the list at #8. This is the former #1 hit, "Seven wonders". I REALLY am going through a Fleetwood Mac-resurgence.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9b4F_ppjnKU

Climbing back onto the list is the 1984 hit from UK musician Joe Jackson. Here is "You can't get what you want(til you know what you want)" at #7.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo759np9-nM

Entering the list today half way through is the best song by 1980s rock band Warrant. From their 1990 album "Cherry Pie", this is the hard-hitting smash, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" at #6.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bx6f68Wd9dc

Now we reach the top five! From Seattle, several musicians from many different area bands got together for record one album in 1991 in memory of singer Andrew Wood, of Seattle's Mother Love Bone. Featuring Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and others, this song and video became a big hit. The sound and feel of this song is just like a fall/winter day in the Pacific Northwest. It feels cool, damp and dark.....just a good song. "Hunger strike" at #5
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjNjJR9jUGo

A classic slow jam hits at #4. Keith Washington's powerful voice just took the R&B world by storm in the early 90s. Why he only released 3 albums still stuns me. The success of this song led to him getting a recurring role on the soap General Hospital. Keith also starred on the series Dexter recently. He has announced plans for a new album, and that can only be a good thing. Here is his 1991 slow jam for the ages, "Kissing You".

The top 3 is up next and we begin with another slow jam. This is a clever little ditty from 1997 from Benton Harbor, Michigan's own Rome. He just released a new album in 2009, but until he tops this, "I Belong to you" will be his signature song. #3...

We have reached the peak! Todays' number one song is another British act. From 1982, this is The Fixx, and "Red Skies"...making it's list debut at #1.....

College Bowl Season 2009...Update

I was wrong again with my 3rd pick, taking me to 0-3 overall. I neglected to post all my picks while on Holiday Break, but I made them all at once. Here is a recap of the last 22 bowl game picks:
Las Vegas Bowl: My pick-BYU, winner-BYU (1-3 overall)
Pointsettia Bowl: My pick-Cal, winner-Utah (1-4 overall)
Hawaii Bowl: My pick-Nevada, winner-SMU (1-5 overall)
Little Caesars Bowl: My pick-Ohio U., winner-Marshall (1-6 overall)
Meineke Car Care Bowl: My pick-UNC, winner-Pittsburgh (1-7 overall)
Ugh, what an ugly start...
Emerald Bowl: My pick-USC, winner-USC (2-7 overall)
Music City Bowl: My pick-Clemson, winner-Clemson (3-7 overall)
Independence Bowl: My pick-Georgia, winner-Georgia (4-7 overall)
Eagle Bank Bowl: My pick-Temple, winner-UCLA (4-8 overall)
Champs Sports Bowl: My pick-Miami, winner-Wisconsin (4-9 overall)

Armed Forces Bowl: My pick-Houston, winner-Air Force (5-11 overall)
Sun Bowl: My pick-Stanford, winner-Oklahoma (5-12 overall)
Ouch....its shaping up as a terrible season for my picks...
Texas Bowl: My pick-Navy, winner-Navy (6-12 overall)
Insight Bowl: My pick-Minnesota, winner-Iowa State (6-13 overall)
Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl: My pick-Virginia Tech, winner-Virginia Tech (7-13 overall)

Capital One Bowl: My pick-Penn State, winner-Penn State (9-13 overall)
Gator Bowl: My pick-West Virginia, winner-Florida State (9-14 overall)
Rose Bowl: My pick-Oregon, winner-Ohio State (9-15 overall)
Sugar Bowl: My pick-Florida, winner-Florida (10-15 overall)

Yikes...I still have hope to reach .500, though!

Today's picks-
International Bowl: Northern Illinois of the MAC takes on the Big East's South Florida in a meeting of directional schools. Not gonna overthink this, since that hasn't helped me much so far, so I will go with the USF Bulls in a close one.
My pick- USF 27 NIU 20

Papajohns.com Bowl: Steve Spurrier's South Carolina Gamecocks take on the UConn Huskies. Connecticut came close in so many games this year and is really better than their 7-5 record shows, and I think they get a big win in this one and dedicate it to their fallen teammate.
My pick- UConn 24 SC 14

Cotton Bowl: Oklahoma State, minus Dez Bryant, will meet the Ole Miss Rebels, led by Dexter McCluster, in the first Cotton Bowl game at it's new home, Cowboys Stadium. This is a very good matchup, I'm sure OSU will have a nice amount of fans making the trip down from Stillwater. I like McCluster in this one..
My pick- Ole Miss 30 Oklahoma State 21

Liberty Bowl: Arkansas Razorbacks take on the ECU Pirates. ECU returns to the Memphis game for a 2nd straight year. They upset Houston in the C-USA Championship Game to get here. The young Skip Holtz is developing a nice program down there in Greenville. Arkansas is a solid team, but I actually think ECU should have drawn a better game. I believe the Pirates take it to the Hogs tonight.
My pick- ECU 27 Arkansas 10

Alamo Bowl: The most talked about game today, and not because of the teams or the players. Texas Tech will play their first game without the fired Mike Leach tonight against Michigan State. The TT players said all the right things this week, that they are still focused and not a bit distracted by the controversy. I guess we will find out how true that is later tonight. I am of the belief that Michigan State will pull off the upset in San Antonio. This is no more than a gut feeling.
My pick- MSU 35 TT 31
