Okay, I was wrong on both picks yesterday....Wyoming and Rutgers made me eat my words. Well done.
Today we have but one bowl game, and it is the New Orleans Bowl. This game features Southern Miss taking on the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders. The Golden Eagles of USM did get beaten by CUSA powers Houston and ECU in close games, and they had losses to losing teams UAB and Louisville along with a loss to Kansas. Their 7-5 mark doesn't really include any big victories, their best wins coming against UCF and Marshall. They are bowl veterans, though, being 3 time winners of this very Bowl game, including an OT win over Troy last December.
Middle Tennessee State has only appeared in 3 bowl games in its football history, the most recent being the Motor City Bowl in 2006, where they lost to Central Michigan. Their last bowl victory was in Orlando in the Tangerine Bowl in 1960 when they defeated Presbyterian College.
USM should win this game over the upstart MTSU kids, let's see if I get this one right.
My pick: USM 27 MTSU 14

13 Songs A Day - Issue #005
In the midst of the Blizzard Of 2009, here comes the latest edition of 13 songs...
While home bound in the storm, many songs have ran through my head. Will my Fleetwood Mac trend continue, or will there be more new additions to the list?
To quote MC Hammer, LET'S GET IT STARTED!
#13...Getting things started is a one hit wonder from back in 1993. This female R&B duo had a nice hit in the midst of the great hip hop/R&B explosion of the mid 90s. They really only had the one hit, but it was, as they said back in the day, "the Jam". This is Sweet N Lo with "40 Dog"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oeGIA6WfDmA
#12...A classic from 1990 is up next. New Edition frontman Ralph Tresvant hit it big with his first solo album. With several chart singles and his trademark high voice, that album is a must have for those of my age. This song was fantastic then, and it still sounds great now. This is "Sensitivity"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6AuslO9f2sE
#11...Also from 1990, the only hit song to come from the all time great TV Show, The Simpsons. This is Bart Simpson, with "Do the Bartman"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ca0d_j9GMac
#10...The top 10 begins with a forgotten song from a forgotten album. Paul Shaffer has been a successful songwriter for decades, and has been David Letterman's sidekick since 1982. But in 1989, he released an album that featured this single. The single features an array of diverse musical talent, from Will Smith to Dion. This was a minor hit 20 years ago, but it deserves a second listen today. Here is "When the radio is on"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WuksLimxOdc
#9...Another new entry to the list right here. This was the 2nd big hit for Dan Hartman during the summer of 1984. He hit #1 with "I can dream about you? then had another solid hit with this follow up...this is "Second nature"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ewocec8hTns
#8...Returning to the list is Hall & Oates...the Philly duo is one of my faves. Here yet again is 1984's "Possession obsession"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAmgHGtOeJ0
#7...Reaching the halfway mark, we come upon Oakland rappers Luniz and the 1995 ode to their favorite pasttime. This is "I got 5 on it"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mX2vhSockUY
#6...The Christmas song for this list is by David Bowie and Bing Crosby...they united for their own rendition of "Little drummer boy"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zMhSjDqvRs
#5...Cracking the top five is the #1 song from the last chart. This is Fleetwood Mac with "Seven wonders"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9b4F_ppjnKU
#4...Entering the list is Eddie Money with his 1986 smash "I wanna go back".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EbkowHt45yg
#3...The top 3 is up next, and it is classic rock band Cream...yes Cream. This is "Sunshine of your love"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cqh54rSzheg
#2...In the runner-up slot is Rockford,Illinois' favorite sons....Cheap Trick! This is their cult classic, "Surrender".
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=th370QmFtk8
#1....and at the top of the heap...This is the biggest hit from the band Poco, who was formed from the ashes of Buffalo Springfield back in 1968. In 1988, they hit #1 with this catchy little ditty, this is "Call it love"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nDFjgcC24gc

College Bowl Season 2009...Day 1
With 34 bowl games, it would be very cumbersome to predict them all at once. So instead I will just predict the games as they arise. Today features the first two bowl games.....the New Mexico Bowl and the St. Petersburg Bowl.
First up, out west in the Land Of Enchantment, it is the New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque. This game features the hard-nosed Fresno State Bulldogs, who played such an aggressive schedule that they ended up with more road games than home games. They will face the 6-6 Wyoming Cowboys. I have seen Fresno play several times this year, and they have a very potent offense that featers the nations' leader in rushing yards per game, Ryan Mathews. Their 8-4 record should be taken with a grain of salt about who the losses were against four bowl teams: Cincinnati, Wisconsin, Boise State and Nevada. Cinci and Boise are undefeated, Wisconsin is a Big Ten foe, and Nevada had THREE 1,000 yard rushers this year. None of those losses are anything to be ashamed of. Fresno is making its 10th bowl appearance in the last 11 years, with only 2006 being a season they were home for bowl season. They lost to arch-rival Colorado State in this very game last year. Overall they have won 4 of their last 6 bowl appearances.
The Bulldogs will meet the Wyoming Cowboys, who are playing in their first bowl game since winning the 2004 Las Vegas Bowl over UCLA, and only their 11th bowl appearance ever. The Cowboys losses all came at the hands of tough foes, too. Losing to Texas, Colorado, Utah, BYU, Air Force and TCU. TCU and Texas are undefeated. Wyoming has, however, been shut out 3 times this year.
All signs point to Fresno putting up some points and winning this game by 10 or more.
My pick: Fresno State 38 Wyoming 21
The other game today is the St. Petersburg Bowl in Tropicana Field down in Florida. Rutgers makes its 4th consecutive bowl appearance here and they will face Central Florida. The battle of the Scarlet Knights and the Golden Knights. A so-so rebuilding year for RU, they played a much-maligned soft schedule that featured not one, but TWO division I-AA(FCS) teams. They also fell to a bad Syracuse team 31-13. The 8-4 Scarlet Knights also fell to Cincinnati(undefeated), West Virginia and Pitt in Big East play.
Rutgers is a very young team and will surely improve with experience, they are up against a UCF team that just missed making it to the C-USA title game. Two of UCFs 4 losses came against Texas and Miami...no shame in those defeats, but they did drop 2 conference games early on against Southern Miss and East Carolina. UCF is also 8-4 and hopes to take advantage of playing in their home state, even though RU travels well and has some ties to the Sunshine State. This should be a very good game.
After going back and forth on this, I went with the Golden Knights of UCF in a tight one.
My pick: UCF 28 Rutgers 24

13 Songs a Day - Issue #003
Back again with some more songs that are memorable for various reasons...
Starting off is a band that is part 80s metal tribute band, part Spinal Tap-ish parody, and just some fun music. They took the oddness route that Bowling For Soup started and pushed it even further into comedy. This is Steel Panther and "Death to all but metal" at
#13
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M5tl2_K-d-g
Next up is a current song by rising stars Shinedown. From their latest album "Sound of Madness", this is the title track. It's rare nowadays that I like newer releases, but I love this song!
#12
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zkYXE0-JsY4
Up to the eleventh slot is a song featured in the 1986 action/comedy "Running Scared". Former Doobie Brother Michael McDonald shares the spotlight in the video with stars of the film, Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. This is "Sweet Freedom" at
#11
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9EBtsN5U7U
Keeping the Christmas Theme alive, here is today's holiday pick. This is the 1983 comedic gem "Grandma got run over by a reindeer" sung by Dr. Elmo.
#10
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vPaGQEskSKM
Climbing into the top ten, here is a song that repeats from an earlier list. It is hard not to think of this band every time I watch The Office and see Creed on the show. The Grass Roots, again, with "Let's live for today" at
#9
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnFZsrs32Co
Longtime rock standouts Bad Company join the list today, but not with one of their old classics. Instead, the band is at number eight with 1990's "If you needed somebody"
#8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-EXh2ZJ9VVY
At the halfway mark, now we get to the Boston quintet that dominated the 80s as a group, and the 90s as solo acts. This is New Edition, with 1988's "NE Heartbreak"
#7
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u5LyAN3HyKQ
Another repeating tune, this one has been on all 3 lists so far. Joe Jackson's "You can't get what you want(Til you know what you want)"
#6
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo759np9-nM
We enter the top five with this underrated Canadian group. Red Rider never got enough acclaim here in the states, even when former frontman Tom Cochrane hit #1 in 1992 on his own with Life Is A Highway. This is the full band at their best, this is "Lunatic fringe"
#5
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xp9852hq0W0
Squeeze jumps onto the list at the fourth spot, this is the quirky video to the quirky 1987 tune "Hourglass"
#4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0UYIfdgNzU
The top three again, and another repeat song starts us off. Once again, here is Hall & Oates with "Possession obsession"
#3
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAmgHGtOeJ0
Now we are near the top of todays' list, funk masters of the 70's and 80's, the Bar-Kays splash onto the list with "Freak show on the dance floor"
#2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0r8aT2aVEMs
And now we reached the top. The band makes a return, but with a different song than before. Classic band Fleetwood Mac is back and on top of the list....with 1987's "Big love"
#1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sl6GePRpVlA
And those are the songs for the day.
Coming soon, a college bowl preview...

13 Songs A Day - Issue #002
Okay, day two...after a long day of sports, time for some good music to make the day complete. Again, no real "rules" for this list, just 13 songs that come to mind for various reasons.
Starting off today, it is singer/songwriter Richard Marx and the 2nd of his 4 top ten singles off his 1987 debut album. This ballad still stands the test of time.....it is "Should've known better"
#13
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DckYV3FQfSE
The top song on the first list, Big Country drops down to #12 today...."In a big country"
#12
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j21ULe2hrY4
Rapper extraordinaire Eminem cracks the list today with his masterpiece from his latest album "Relapse"....this is "Beautiful"
#11
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfnmCOUieLw
The top ten begins with an all-time great band. Boston only released a few albums, but they are all excellent. This is from their 3rd album, titled 3rd Stage, this is "We're ready" and it sounds as good today as it did 20+ years ago.
#10
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7sKEDTOuquU
Next, it is a #1 smash from 1966. Question mark and the mysterians had but one hit, but man is it a classic! This is "96 Tears"
#9
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xkvK638yKuY
In 1985, Paul Hardcastle used a voiceover from an ABC News special about the Vietnam War and a dance beat to create one of the most unique top ten hits in history. This is "19"...at #8
#8
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oSGvqjVHik8
At the halfway mark, this is the debut single from Richmond, Virginia's most famous rapper. Mad Skillz(now known only as Skillz) released "The nod factor" in 1996...I do enjoy the sights of Richmond in the video. Underrated song and artist, in my humble opinion.
#7
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7zOKUwfPTQ
In 1988, some people in Hollywood had a good idea....make a sequel to the 1980 classic film "Caddyshack"....but they ruined that idea by not having Ted Knight, Bill Murray or Rodney Dangerfield in the sequel. One thing they got right was bringing back 80s soundtrack king Kenny Loggins to make the signature song for the flick. The song "Nobody's fool" is far better than the film:

I'm still digging Joe Jackson from yesterday's list. #13 yesterday, it is #5 today..."You can't get what you want (til you know what you want)"

Continuing a theme of at least one holiday song per list, today I included Run DMC's 1987 classic "Christmas in Hollis"...enjoy (R.I.P. Jam Master Jay)

Da da dada da da dada, da da dada da da dada....the repetitive chant of this 1990 dance jam. British djs DNA remixed an older Suzanne Vega song and added a booming bass beat, looped her hypnotic vocals and made this perfect song. Warning: this song WILL get stuck in your head!

In the runner-up spot, a 3rd returning song from the first list. Yesterday it was #5, today Kix "Cold shower" climbs up to #2....again, they are in concert next Friday in Sayreville,NJ at Starland Ballroom!

And now, topping todays' list...one of the greatest duos ever and another of my all-time favorite music groups. This Philly twosome has had dozens of hits...and this is my favorite. Noteworthy for being one of few songs that John Oates sang lead vocals for, 1985's "Possession Obsession" is just a cool, cool song in my book. This is #1....Hall & Oates

Starting off today, it is singer/songwriter Richard Marx and the 2nd of his 4 top ten singles off his 1987 debut album. This ballad still stands the test of time.....it is "Should've known better"

The top ten begins with an all-time great band. Boston only released a few albums, but they are all excellent. This is from their 3rd album, titled 3rd Stage, this is "We're ready" and it sounds as good today as it did 20+ years ago.

In 1985, Paul Hardcastle used a voiceover from an ABC News special about the Vietnam War and a dance beat to create one of the most unique top ten hits in history. This is "19"...at #8

At the halfway mark, this is the debut single from Richmond, Virginia's most famous rapper. Mad Skillz(now known only as Skillz) released "The nod factor" in 1996...I do enjoy the sights of Richmond in the video. Underrated song and artist, in my humble opinion.

13 Songs A Day - Issue #001
This is the first of what will be a daily(or sometimes maybe more or less often) post of 13 songs. These will be songs I like, songs stuck in my head, songs from a certain year or memory, or just songs I select for other reasons.
Today, the list starts with a tune that was stuck in my head this past week. From 1984, this was the 2nd biggest US hit for British singer Joe Jackson. This is "You can't get what you want (til you know what you want)" and it is:

Next, it is a great underground hip hop joint from 1992. Philly rappers Steady B, Cool C and Ultimate Eaze formed the trio C.E.B. (Countin' Endless Bank) and had this one monster party jam hit before legal problems dissolved the group. Cool C and Steady B took part in an armed bank robbery in 1996, during the crime a female cop was shot and killed. Steady B was convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the murder. This is no endorsement of the crime, but an acknowledgment of a great tune, C.E.B's "Get The Point" it is:

In 1987 Fleetwood Mac released the album "Tango in the night", the bands 14th release. It would become their 2nd biggest seller after the 1977 classic "Rumours". This song was the biggest US hit from "Tango...", reaching as high as #4, this is "Little Lies" at

Next up, in the spirit of the coming holiday season, this is Boyz II Men and "Let it snow", from 1993:

I have to include a tune from my fave band in this list. So many to choose from, but today I will pick the song Def Leppard used to open the show on the Hysteria tour in 1988. This is the 1983 jam "Stagefright", at
#9

The next song is by a band that isn't really one of my favorites, but they have made some music I like. This is Atlanta, Georgia's own R.E.M. and 1988's "Orange Crush"
#8

This music legend passed away this past summer. His music, however, will last forever. With so many giant hits by the gloved one to choose from, I decided on a 1984 duet with his older brother Jermaine. This is of course, Michael Jackson(with Jermaine) on a song from Jermaine's "Dynamite" album. "Tell me I'm not dreamin'(Too good to be true)"
#7

As I get past the halfway mark, the next song is by Baltimore-area band Kix. These guys rose to stardom in the 80s, but their classic rock guitar/blues sound would have been a success in any era. Still touring to this day, they have a show in Sayreville,NJ at the Starland Ballroom next Friday. This is "Cold shower" by Kix:

An oldie but goodie at #5. It was odd to find out that one of the members of this band, Creed Bratton, is on the sitcom The Office, playing a character of the same name. The Grass Roots are up next, with 1967's top 5 smash "Let's live for today"
#5
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnFZsrs32Co
Now another change of pace....Phill Collins (and Genesis) are among my faves. This is from 1989's "...but seriously" album. This is Phil Collins with "Something happened on the way to heaven"
#4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gAkBfY-b_s0
Now back to my youth, and fun rap duo Kid'n'Play. Their 1990 movie "House party" is an alltime classic, the 1991 sequel, not so much....but House Party 2 did have a kicking soundtrack that featured the duo on this jam "Ain't gonna hurt nobody"
#3

In the runner-up slot, it is the DC group Shai, and a song that was actually on both their album "Blackface" as well as the Beverly Hills Cop 3 soundtrack. This is "The place where you belong" by Shai.

And topping the list in the debut of the 13 Songs A Day post.....from the UK, this is Big Country, with their only US hit, 1982's "In a big country"
